The Macedonian Association for Free Sexual Orientation (MASSO) after carefully reviewing the Progress Report for the Republic of Macedonia (2006) of the European Union reacted in regards to the lack of concrete pointing of the situation with the human rights of the LGBT people in the country.
Beside the focus put on the situation in the prisons, the rights of the children, the minority education, the situation with the ethnic minorities, the rights of the persons with disabilities, labour rights, trade union rights and women’s rights, there is not a single point made in the Report, concretely considering the rights of the sexual minorities, or the necessity of the promulgation of the non – discrimination law.
According the facts that the past experience have brought to us, the emphasized pointing at a particular issue to the authorities by the EU is found as the only mode for compelling the government to make the needed changes and take the necessary action.
For this reason, and especially regarding the negative attitude that the new government showed in terms of the LGBT issue in the pre – election campaign, MASSO believes that the reproaching of the authorities by the EU, by pointing ratified Protocol 12 and the recognition of the human rights of the LGBT people as important condition for the EU integration process, is an inevitable step for making the changes in the policies of the government. Our insistence on the legal recognition of the human rights of LGBT people and the influence of the EU in this process was based also on having on mind the recent negative experiences in Poland.
MASSO in the reaction also pointed out that would appreciate every additional rebuke regarding the human rights of the LGBT people that the EU would made to the government in the perspective of provision and development of human, tolerant and democratic society.
It's bee two monts since MASSO sent the reaction the official representatives to the EU, but no reply has been received yet.
