The anti-gay Älä alistu ('don't submit) campaign has sparked a wave of church resignations similar to the one which followed the televised gay rights debate last autumn, according to the website eroakirkosta.fi, set up for church resignations by an association linked to the Freethinkers, on Thursday.
Some 1,500 people left the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church on Wednesday, the normal average for this time of year would be 50 people a day. Around 500 people resigned from church on Tuesday.
Johanna Sauna-aho, a spokesman for the website, commented that based on the feedback, it seems that this was the final straw for many of those who were already considering leaving the church after the Finnish Broadcasting Company's (YLE) gay rights debate in the autumn.
Some 40,000 people left the church after the gay rights debate.
