Prague, May 30 (CTK) - Nearly three-fourths of Czechs (72 percent) believe homosexual couples should have the right to officially register their partnership and nearly half of the citizens (45 percent) would allow marriages of homosexuals, according to a CVVM institute's poll released yesterday.

The views of Czech population on same-sex couples have changed only slightly over the past year, CVVM concluded.

More than half of Czechs (54 percent) said they believed gays and lesbians would have problems in relations with other people in the town or village if they openly talked about their sexual identity. On the other hand, 38 percent said coming out would not cause homosexuals any problem.

One-third of Czechs said they support the right of homosexuals to adopt children. Last year the number of supporters of homosexual adoptions was 4 percentage points lower.

Three-fifths of respondents were against the introduction of such adoptions.

Young people, people with higher education, higher-income groups and right-wing voters showed more support to homosexual rights.

A negative stance on gays and lesbians was more often presented by followers of the Roman Catholic Church, voters of the Christian Democrats (KDU-CSL) and the Communists (KSCM).

The poll was conducted among 1115 persons in early May.
