Gender Equaliy and Discrimination of LGBT people

We utterly protest against the discrimination caused by the activities of the Gender Equality Association (TCEK), supported by Mrs. Oya Talat, which aims to prevent sexist discrimination present in the social and political lives of Turkish Cypriots. The gender notions and terminology adopted by the TCEK is outdated and inadequate as it comes short of acknowledging all sections of the society which are affected by the gender inequalities. Besides ignoring the importance of the inclusion of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) population in the struggle against the patriarchal culture that we all live in, it represents internalised heterosexist standpoints of the patriarchal system.

We request the TCEK to take actions to include all sections of the society, in order to fight more effectively the patriarchal system; hence, affirm Initiative Against Homophobia's commitment to co-operation for a joint struggle in this direction.
