The largest gay pride parade in the history of Croatia ended in good spirits without any incidents in Zagreb, the capital, on Saturday.
More than 1,000 people marched through the city’s streets to the welcome of many onlookers. Only two people were detained – one for carrying an inappropriate sign and another for insulting the participants.
After violence at a pride parade that ended with 137 arrests the previous week in Split, the LGBTIQ parade in Zagreb was guarded by security that cost some one million kunas (135,310 Euros). Police did not disclose how many policemen were on the streets.
One of the organisers, Marko Jurcic said that he was proud of all that participated.
"It was great, everything took place in dignity and without major incidents. People from all over Croatia, but also neighbouring countries were here. Thank you to the police for a job well done," Jurcic said.
He added that the organisers had rented private security, just in case. They paid 12,000 kunas (1,624 Euros).
The participants also named the "homophobe" and "homofriend" of the decade. The first title went to Marijana Petir from Croatian Peasant Party (HSS), while Vesna Pusic from Croatian People’s Party (HNS) was honoured with the second.
