Brussels, 9th February 2010
The European Parliament’s Intergroup on LGBT Rights wishes to hereby express its
strong support to the amendments proposed by the Lesbian Group Kontra to the
Working Group for Changes to the Constitution.
The amendments concern the inclusion of sexual orientation in the proposed changes
to the Constitution, notably under Heading III, Section 1, Art. 14 § 1; Art. 17 § 2;
Section 2, Art. 39; and the inclusion of same-sex unions under Section 3, Art. 61. The
changes argued for are fully in line with EU law, Article 19 of the Treaty for the
European Union, and the Charter for Fundamental Rights.
We believe that adopting the proposed amendments will bring genuine equality to
Croatian citizens, and send a positive political message to the European Union with
regards to Croatia’s accession process.
