Petition to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia
We are addressing you with an appeal to act on behalf of the Republic of Croatia and call on Iraq's Government to act urgently in order to stop the torture and killings based on sexual orientation.
International organization for defending and protecting human rights, Human Rights Watch has published the 67-pages report that documents a wide-reaching campaign of extrajudicial executions, kidnappings, and torture of gay men by the Army “militia” of religious extremists in Iraq.
The report “They Want Us Exterminated: Murder, Torture, Sexual Orientation and Gender in Iraq” is available on web page www.hrw.org.
The report, which is based on site investigations in April this year, states that hundreds of LGBT people have been murdered in Iraq in the last five years. The murders are committed by different Islamic militia while police and courts in Iraq choose to close their eyes. The corpses were thrown in the garbage or hanged in the streets as warning.
Our organizations will organize a peaceful demonstrations after submitting the petition. We will light candles at Nikola Šubić Zrinjski Square (traditional starting point of LGBT Pride manifestations) for all victims of religious extremism.
The appeal for the stopping of the killings made by the Republic of Croatia would confirm the ability of the Republic of Croatia to face the demands of the international community in regards to protection of human rights.
With best regards,
Sanja Juras,
Coordinator of Lesbian Group Kontra
Kristijan Grdjan,
Coordinator of Iskorak- Centre for Sexual and Gender Minorities Rights
Bojana Genov,
Coordinator of Women's Network of Croatia
