ILGA-Europe's 15th Anniversary
ILGA-Europe 1996-2011...15 years of working for equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people in Europe.
ILGA-Europe was founded 15 years ago in 1996, when ILGA (the International Lesbian and Gay Association), established separate regions.
The first 5 years ILGA-Europe worked entirely on the basis of volunteer resources. However, in 2001 its potential contribution to the European Union's anti-discrimination policies (established under Article 13 of the Treaty of Amsterdam) was recognised through the provision of core funding. ILGA-Europe could then set up an office in Brussels, and recruit permanent staff. Since then ILGA-Europe has developed its professionalism, but at the same time maintained it core of member organisations with their activists and/or staff - in all their diversity. .
ILGA-Europe will celebrate its 15th anniversary by looking back together with some of the important personalities from member organisation who have contributed to shaping the organisation since 1996. Many of them are still very active in their “home” organisations and in ILGA-Europe. We will also gather testimonies from our main partners and allies who have been working together with ILGA-Europe for equality and human rights for all. We realise that we can learn a lot by looking back, and that the many experiences we have gathered can and will strengthen ILGA-Europe in the future.
Each month, starting from February and for the rest of 2011, the Euro-Letter will present personal stories from the 15 years that ILGA-Europe has existed.
Look forward, celebrate with us and stay tuned!
