Moscow Authorities Fail to Ensure Safety for LGBT Communities

On the eve of Russia accepting its presidency of the Council of Europe, on 27 May 2006 Moscow authorities have dispersed a peaceful demonstration in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights and failed to ensure the safety of its participants. The events resulted in violence by Russian Orthodox extremists and neo-Nazi groups against LGBT people and their supporters. Earlier this month the mayor of Moscow Yuriy Luzhkov had refused to authorise a gay parade. “We will not even consider this matter” he said in an interview to a Russian radio station one day before the event.

UN denies consultative status to ILGA-Europe

On 17 May 2006, when the world marked International Day against Homophobia, the United Nations (UN) rejected ILGA-Europe’s application for consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Day before a similar application by LSVD a German national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) federation was also rejected.

17 May – International Day Against Homophobia

For the second time, today, the world marks International Day Against Homophobia. Homophobia is an irrational fear and dislike of homosexuality and of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Similar to racism, xenophobia or sexism, when fear and dislike is targeted at particular groups of people, homophobia leads to prejudice, discrimination and even violence against LGBT people.

Moldovan capital refuses gays to assemble

On 28 April 2006, the Chisinau Mayor refused a request by the Moldovan lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organisation GenderDoc-M to organise a manifestation by the Moldovan Parliament on 5 May 2006 during the fifth Moldovan LGBT Pride festival. The Chisinau Mayor refused similar request also last year.
