Limited scope of new Fundamental Rights Agency is disappointing

This week Ministers of Justice of the European Union’s member states reached an agreement on the new Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA). Formally the deal will be sealed next week when the heads of all EU member states meet in Brussels. The FRA is due to start its work in January 2007.

Europarliament excludes sexual orientation from equality statement for its secretariat

The European Parliament's bureau which comprised of the president and seven vice-presidents, has adopted a declaration of principles regarding diversity in the secretariat but voted to exclude sexual orientation. These principles are guidelines for the European Parliament’s staff.

In 1996 the General Assembly of the United Nations invited member states to observe the International Day of Tolerance on 16 November.
