Bashkir deputy sues President Putin after anti gay events in Moscow
Edward Murzin claims that the President has to safeguard the respect for human rights as written in the constitution
A well-known Russian defender of homosexuals’ rights has appealed to court seeking to sue Russian President Vladimir Putin for failing to meet his direct duties.
Edward Murzin, an MP in Russia’s Bashkortostan Republic, wants to oblige Putin to fulfill his presidential duties as the guarantor of all the citizens’ constitutional rights through court, the Newsru website reports.
Not being a homosexual himself, Murzin said in his appeal, he still believes every member of society has a right for family life, which should not be violated because of the person’s belonging to this or that minority.
Legislative bodies, courts and government agencies do everything to block any initiative aiming to respect the rights of sexual minorities in Russia, Murzin says. Violations of gay rights flourish because Putin allows them to, while he should be defending the rights of all Russian citizens, including sexual minorities.
“If Putin just once expressed tolerance towards sexual minorities, the air would be cleared in Russia,” Murzin added.
The case that will probably not be accepted by the court is putting more pressure on Putin to express himself on gay rights after several years of silence.
