The first Romanian gay religious marriage was celebrated Sunday evening between Florin Buhuceanu, executive director of gay rights foundation Accept and his Spanish boyfriend, Raul.
The legal ceremony will take place in Spain, which in 2005 became the fourth country to legalize same-sex marriage.
The religious ceremony was performed by Diane Fisher, bishop of the Metropolitan Community Churches.
Fisher, a lesbian who has been married for four years, was in Romania to attend a second annual gay pride parade which took place Sunday.
The Romanian gay community is advocating for a civil partnership, an alternative to marriage which would not affect the country's legislation concerning family, and would not require a religious service.
In addition to Spain, the three other countries to have legalized gay marriages are Canada, the Netherlands and Belgium. Another 22 European Union members states recognize several rights of sexual minorities, according to the Accept foundation.
