Polish gays struggle with authorities

20/11/2005
There have been angry scenes in the Polish town of Poznan after gay activists tried to stage a demonstration which had been banned by authorities.

Police in full riot gear blocked the several dozen marchers, while also trying to keep anti-gay protesters away.

The town's mayor had refused permission for the so-called Equality Parade on the grounds that he could not ensure security.

Human rights group Amnesty International is among the groups to have criticised that decision.

It comes at a time of heightened tension between gay rights groups and the recently elected right wing government.

The EU says it is watching Poland closely to make sure minority rights are respected.
