Mozaika identifies main priorities for 2007

On 13 January 2007, the first General Assembly of “Mozaika”, the Latvian Alliance of LGBT People and Their Friends took place in Riga. Day before the General Assembly Mozaika organised an informal seminar for its members and other NGOs on legal recognition of same-sex partnerships. Mozaika was established in February 2006.

Such issues as same-sex registered partnership, strengthening of LGBT community and organisation of the Riga Pride/Friendship Days 2007 were among the main priorities for this year discussed during the Assembly. During the Assembly, Mozaika members and supporters elected a new board and discussed the 2007 priorities and activities plan. Representatives from other NGOs with whom Mozaika has established good working and partnership relationships took part in the Assembly.

The Assembly elected a new board of 7 people. This is the largest board so far and in total 10 people proposed their candidatures for the board membership. Kristine Garina, previously acting Chair of the Board, was now elected Chair of the Mozaika Board. During the Assembly four main directions of Mozaika work were identified:

information and education on issues related to LGBT people
strengthening of LGBT community in Latvia
working towards legal equality for LGBT people
organising social and cultural events

The Mozaika Assembly have also created five working groups on legal, cultural, IT, sport & youth issues, and organising Riga Pride/Friendship Days 2007.

Riga Pride/Friendship Days 2007 will be one of the main events by and for LGBT community in Latvia also this year. Mozaika believes this event is an important instrument to raise awareness and consequent understanding of LGBT issues. Participants of the Mozaika Assembly warmheartedly greeted the news about the London Pride organisers’ offer to form a partnership between Riga and London Pride organisers. In the nearest future the London Pride organisers will visit Riga to negotiate specifics of this partnership.

Various members of the European Parliament, politicians from EU member states, as well as representatives from national LGBT organisations expressed their desire and determination to take parting this year’s Riga Pride /Friendship Days.

Participants of the Mozaika’s General Assembly expressed their satisfaction with the Mozaika’s work and achievements and expressed their hope the work aiming to improve the human rights situation for LGBT people and democracy strengthening in Latvia will continues in 2007.
