Press Release of Patent Association - 13.06.2008

Today the police chief of Budapest issued an official decision in which he revokes his earlier decision banning the LGBT Pride March, after they issued a press release to the same effect yesterday. The new decision approves of the march and its route as originally suggested by organisers.

The police and organisers were going to meet this afternoon to renegotiate the pride march. In an urgent move, the police chief of Budapest sent out his official decision to the organisers and cancelled the negotiations this morning.

Patent is grateful to all individuals and organisations who contributed to this outcome.

“We hope the police have understood that it is their job to protect the march from attacks, and not to try to avoid the attacks by banning the march” said Gábor Kuszing of Patent Association. “We hope that they have learned from last year’s serious attacks and will appear in adequate numbers to protect us.”

Last year’s LGBT march saw unprecedented attacks from right-wing groups and the police failed to perform important protective measures then. You may join Patent's online petition for adequate police protection here: http://www.egyenlojogokat.hu/english.
