Transgender

ILGA-Europe defines itself as an LGBT organisation. We have always strived to incorporate trans issues into our lobby activities. In order to better coordinate and strengthen our efforts in this domain, the trans working group was formed in April 2003, consisting of ILGA-Europe board members and independent consultants.

ILGA-Europe’s specific work in the field of trans issues includes:

  • recent publication of a report on the Max Planck Institute legal survey on transsexuality in Europe;
  • organisation of workshops on transgender themes during our annual conference as well as provision of scholarships for trans activists to take part in the conference;
  • research on transgender people, who are also gay, lesbian and bisexual;
  • ILGA-Europe’s capacity building in the field of trans issues;
  • lobby and advocacy actions / interventions and submissions to different European institutions, such as the OSCE, EU institutions, Council of Europe.

ILGA-Europe’s political discourse in most instances includes references to gender identity and gender expression in the same line with sexual orientation. Special attention is given to transgender issues in our policy documents and guidelines.

We very much welcome the foundation of the European Transgender Council ( http://tgeu.net) and are open for cooperation!

To contact the trans group, please write to its chair Deborah Lambilotte at: deborah@ilga-europe.org. For operational matters you can contact Maxim Anmeghichean, Programmes Director at maxim@ilga-europe.org
