LGBTI equality and human rights in Europe and Central Asia

Scholarship programme

Read more about our scholarship programme here.

Note, deadline for applying for a full or partial scholarship has passed!

ILGA-Europe offer scholarships for activists who would otherwise be unable to participate in the conference for financial reasons. We encourage you to donate to ILGA-Europe’s Diversity Fund to support wider, more inclusive participation by LGBTI activists at ILGA-Europe’s Annual Conference. All donations made to ILGA-Europe’s Diversity Fund will go directly towards scholarships for activists from segments of the LGBTI communities who are under-represented within the broader movement.

Process and timeline

Please note that as of 2017, ILGA-Europe will offer two scholarship opportunities. The aim of this process is to allow more people to attend the ILGA-Europe conference:

  1. Full scholarship – This includes the coverage of participation fee, accommodation and travel costs
  2. Partial scholarship – This includes coverage of only part of the costs

The process for partial scholarships will open after announcement of results of the full scholarship process. Applicants for full scholarships that were not successful in the first round will need to reapply for the second round if they want to be considered for a partial scholarship.

Scholarship applicants will be informed of the result of the selection process by mid-July and should confirm their participation shortly after.

Note, deadline for applying for a full or partial scholarship has passed!

Please note that we are only able to offer a limited number of scholarships. We encourage you to seek funding in advance within your organisation or from available funding sources (e.g. Mama Cash, travel grants from local Open Society Foundations, local embassies, etc.).

Selection criteria

In assessing applications for scholarships ILGA-Europe will take into account the following:

  • ILGA-Europe are committed to ensuring outreach and accessibility for LGBTI communities in all their diversity. We give particular attention to diversity of representation from delegations to the Annual Conference – whether it is in terms of sexual orientations, gender identities and/or gender expression, sex characteristics, cultures, religions, linguistic, ethnic groups as well as in terms of age, disability, visual or hearing ability, health status, financial means and family composition/responsibilities or other identities.
  • We particularly welcome applications from activists belonging to groups which are under-represented within the LGBTI movement.
  • We prioritise the activists that have not been able to participate in the ILGA-Europe Annual Conference previously.
  • In cases where there was more than one application from one organisation that fulfils our criteria, we decide to grant only one. We leave it to the organisations to nominate their representatives.
  • ILGA-Europe also welcome participants coming from regional branches or smaller members of your own networks .
  • Selected applicants will need to demonstrate how they contribute to the work of ILGA-Europe and to that of the LGBTI movement in their region (Europe and Central-Asia).
  • Given ILGA-Europe's geographic focus, applications people living and/or working outside Europe and Central-Asia will not be considered.

Registering as a scholar

If you are applying as a scholar, please do not register online for the moment. ILGA-Europe will get in touch with you directly regarding the outcome of your scholarship application. If and when your application is approved, you will receive a separate link to register online as a scholar.

Please note that all scholars will be offered shared accommodation (twin room) at the conference venue.

Donate to ILGA-Europe’s Diversity Fund

Diversity is what makes ILGA-Europe the vibrant membership-based organisation that it is today. Having proactively worked on this issue for more than a decade, we are committed to ensure outreach and accessibility across all our activities for LGBTI communities in all their diversity. This is particularly true at the Annual Conference, which is a high time for the European LGBTI movement to meet. It is where we develop a sense of belonging and where we discuss and develop key aspects of our work towards equality. If diversity within our own movement is not represented in this key moment, how can we aim at being representative of LGBTI communities?

Over the past years, ILGA-Europe worked hard to make diversity a real part of our daily work and ensure that our organisation takes concrete actions to fulfil its commitments. You can take a concrete action too and support wider, more inclusive participation of LGBTI activists at the Annual Conference by donating to ILGA-Europe’s Diversity Fund now.

All donations made to ILGA-Europe’s Diversity Fund will go directly towards scholarships for activists from segments of the LGBTI communities who are otherwise under-represented within the broader movement.
